John Harding

Shakerley Ward 2019

About Me

I have lived in Cheshire for fifteen years and currently resides in Moulton, where I am the vice-chairman of the parish council. I have been most active driving our Neighbourhood Plan to completion; we are at the final step of the eighteen stage legal process and the proposed plan should protect our community for the years to come.

I am married with two children – one of whom currently attends Byley Primary School. My hobbies include reading, walking and cycling.

I have been nominated as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Shakerley ward as “John David Harding” and this covers the parishes of Lostock Gralam, Allostock, Nether Poever, Lach Dennis, Byley and Sproston.

What I stand for

If elected, I will work on the following…

New Developments

There have been a number of large new housing developments in recent years in the towns of Northwich, Middlewich, and Winsford, and these additional homes have put pressure on local transport, services and schools. If elected, I will oppose any new substantial development in the ward and work with the parish councils to bring forward formal Neighbourhood Plans to allow communities, not developers, to shape the future of our parishes.

Our Roads

Potholes damage vehicles and can injure or kill cyclists. The roads in and around Shakerley are in a dreadful state. If elected, I will demand Cheshire West & Chester Council restore the current road maintenance budget and repair the current potholes that blight our villages.

Furthermore, I will work with local parish councils to identify roads and junctions, such as Byley Lane, King Street and Holmes Chapel Road, which need to be considered for further safety measures or lower speed limits, and to represent community concerns to the unitary authority in the strongest possible terms.

Protecting public services

Key public services are under threat from cuts – from libraries to bin collections. I will oppose any proposal to reduce the services. Instead, the Council should look at the £1.5m overspend on an IT project.

In addition, the Labour administration have just privatised the sexual health provision to Virgin Care, and taken it away from the NHS. If elected, I will oppose any such unneccessary privitisation of our public services.

Working for you!

if elected, I will hold regular surgeries throughout the ward with residents and parish councils, as well as being responsive all year round to assist with concerns. An absent councillor is no good to anyone!

Northwich Town Centre

Our retailers and businesses are under enormous pressure from rising costs, Internet shopping and Brexit uncertainty, and with Barons Quay mostly unfilled and major shops closing their Northwich stores, the town centre needs the support of the council.

I will oppose the recent car parking charges, push for a better transport network and support events to bring people to the town.

HS2

The proposed Crewe to Manchester HS2 route will particularly impact Lostock Green and Lostock Gralam, causing years of turmoil. If elected, I will push for Cheshire West to strongly oppose this bloated waste of taxpayers money and, if it were to proceed, to ensure affected communities are supported.

Transport Improvements

Bus services are under threat throughout the country and Northern Rail services are a shambles. If elected, I will oppose any reduction in the bus services for Lostock Gralam and Allostock, I will continue to support the re-opening of the Middlewich line and ensure the council uses any leverage it has against Northern Rail to improve its abysmal offering to long-suffering passengers.

Last year, the Council produced a Northwich Transport Strategy to alleviate and address the transport problems around Northwich – let’s get that done!
